Moderate earthquake shakes Bengkulu province in Indonesia's Sumatra
JAKARTA (AFP) Jul 02, 2003
An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale rocked the Indonesian province of Bengkulu on Sumatra island on Wednesday, sparking panic but causing no injuries, the meteorology office said.

The quake, which struck at 7:47 am (0047 GMT), had its epicentre 33 kilometres (21 miles) underground and 95 kilometres southwest of Bengkulu city, the office said.

A provincial meteorological official said many residents of the city and surrounding areas fled buildings when they felt the quake.

Bengkulu is an especially earthquake-prone region of Indonesia. It suffered widespread damage in June 2000 when a quake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale killed 102 people.
