Earthquake hits northern Japan

An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale shook northern Japan early Thursday, but there were no fears of tidal waves, the meteorological agency said.

The quake occurred at 8:52 am (2352 GMT Wednesday), with its focus located off the coast of Kushiro City some 900 kilometres (560 miles) north of Tokyo and 50 kilometres below sea-level, the agency said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage from the quake.
