Typhoon Krovanh, which brought heavy winds and torrential rains to the north part of the country, hit late Monday after moving south from China.
One man was killed in the coastal province of Quang Ninh when his house collapsed on top of him in Mong Cai town, along the Chinese border, an official from Central Committee for Storm and Flood Control said.
Five other people in the province were injured by falling buildings and trees. The typhoon also triggered electricity blackouts in Quang Ninh, while roads were blocked by uprooted trees, he said.
The typhoon, packing winds of 117 km (about 72 miles) per hour, was the most powerful storm to hit Vietnam this year, according to state media.
Although it subsequently subsided, many northern provinces experienced heavy rains Tuesday, triggering flash flood warnings, particularly in the mountainous regions.
Authorities in coastal Red River Delta provinces have been put on alert to shore up dykes in case of flooding.
Krovanh, which was named after a Cambodian tree, wreaked havoc on large parts of southern China, killing at least three people before moving into Vietnam.
Two people died in northern Vietnam last month when Typhoon Koni hit land.
