Killer hippo terrorises Senegalese villagers
DAKAR (AFP) Mar 06, 2004
A hippopotamus has killed a 60-year-old man in Senegal's southeastern Tambacounda village, after "tearing apart" three other people since the start of the year, the daily Le Soleil reported Saturday.

The man who lost his life on Friday had been fishing on the Gambia river, the newspaper said. He "leaves three wives and many children", added the report.

Many villagers in the region where the beast lives no longer dare to sail out on the river. Since the hippopotamus is a protected species, they have "called on the public authorities" to help them, Le Soleil reported.
