Heatwave kills nine in Spain's Canary Islands

Nine mostly elderly people have died in a heatwave in the Canary Islands, Spanish officials said Thursday, taking the country's death toll in four days of extremely hot weather to 19.

Four women between the ages of 70 and 90 died, while three men aged 55, 71 and one of "advanced age" succumbed to the high temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean archipelago, where thermometers have rocketed to 42 degrees Celsiusdegrees Fahrenheit),

Two homeless people also died, the regional health minister, Maria del Mar Julios said, but she did not give their age or sex.

More than 100 people have been hospitalized in the Canary Islands, located to the southwest of Spain as the country grapples with a major heatwave.
