Some 20 Russian anglers floating on a chunk of ice in the Gulf of Finland were rescued Sunday by boat and helicopter, the local emergencies ministry said. The group, who included a woman, had ventured onto the frozen sea in the Kirovsk region, west of Russia's second city Saint Petersburg. Despite the authorities' warnings, fishing through a hole in the ice is a popular pastime in Russia and people often walk far across the frozen surfaces of lakes and the sea, at the risk of being cast adrift. Hundreds of anglers are rescued every year in the Russian part of the Gulf of Finland. All rights reserved. © 2005 Agence France-Presse.
