Moderate quake jolts northern Japan

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale shook northern Japan late Thursday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, adding there was no danger of tsunami waves.

The quake occurred at 10:00 pm (1300 GMT) with its focus 70 kilometersmiles) below sea level off the coast of Aomori, some 600 kilometers north of Tokyo, the agency said Friday.

Police in Aomori said there were no reports of casualty or damage.

Japan experiences about 20 percent of the world's powerful earthquakes.
