"I am pleased with Canadas commitment to Africa and believe the time is right for leaders to reflect on progress made since the 2002 Kananaskis Summit in Alberta, when we launched the G8 Africa Action Plan," Martin said.

The issue of the Kyoto Protocol on limiting greenhouse gases and broadening aid to Africa are key items on the summit agenda. Martin also hopes to advance support for peace efforts in the Sudan, Afghanistan, Haiti and the Middle East, his office said.

The summit of the world's eight leading industrialized nations will be held in Gleneagles, Scotland on July 7 and 8. The G8 includes Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States.
