At least 20 drown in Iranian floods
At least 20 people have drowned and dozens are missing in flash floods in Golestan province in northeastern Iran, local media reported Wednesday.
Several villages have been cut off as a result of hours of heavy rain which started Tuesday.
Scores of livestock have also been killed in the floods and vast areas of farming land have been damaged.
State television said rescue teams have been dispatched to the area, where the victims are in desperate need of tents, food and clothes.
Golestan province has been stricken by floods for several days. At least 27 people were killed on July 31 in Kalaleh district.
Floods in the area are worsened by intensive deforestation of this mountainous region. All rights reserved. © 2005 Agence France-Presse.
