China's known death toll from Typhoon Talim rose to 124 Wednesday while 31 people remain missing, state media reported.

Talim made landfall in the eastern province of Fujian last Thursday. It slowly churned its way through the provinces of Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan and Hubei, dumping heavy rain and causing floods and landslides.

Some 19 million residents in those provinces were affected and 1.84 million of them had to be evacuated, Xinhua news agency reported.

Landslides and floods destroyed or damaged huge areas of farmlands and some 374,000 houses, causing direct economic losses of 15.4 billion yuanbillion dollars), it said.

The worst hit province of Anhui reported finding ten more bodies to raise the provincial death toll to 76 while 12 people were missing, it said.

It added that some 6.3 million people were affected in the province, 457,000 of them so severely that they had to be evacuated.

East and southeast China are prone to typhoons and have been pummeled by dozens over the past 50 years.

The State Council, or cabinet, has earmarked 182 million yuan (22 million dollars) for relief efforts.
