Two more Croatian firefighters die after island wildfire
ZAGREB, Sept 6 (AFP) Sep 06, 2007
Two Croatian firefighters died overnight from burns suffered while battling to control an Adriatic island wildfire, the state-run HINA news agency said Thursday.

The latest deaths take to 11 the total number of local firemen to have lost their lives since the blaze broke out on Kornat island a week ago, said HINA, quoting the health ministry.

Six of the firefighters were found dead on Thursday last week after getting trapped within the flames of the wildfire following a sudden change in wind direction.

Another two firemen remain in hospital in a critical condition.

The fire -- which is the worst in Croatia's history -- devastated two thirds of Kornat island, which is a national park located on the country's central Adriatic coast.

It was started by a cigarette butt thrown into grass by a national park receptionist who has since been detained, according to a preliminary police investigation.
