Hurricane Ida strikes eastern Nicaragua
MANAGUA, Nov 5 (AFP) Nov 05, 2009
Hurricane Ida slammed into Nicaragua Thursday, unleashing strong winds and heavy rain across the eastern coast, from where hundreds had been evacuated.

The category one hurricane packed winds of 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour and struck between Bluefields and Puerto Cabezas, the US-based National Hurricane Center said in its 1500 GMT advisory.

Soldiers had evacuated more than 1,100 people from the area and erected 53 temporary shelters, said general Oscar Perez Casar, the head of civil defense forces.

Ida first hit Corn Island, off Nicaragua's east coast, as a tropical storm, damaging buildings and infrastructure, officials said.

No casualties were reported on the island, but 800 people remained in shelters.

Ida was forecast to move across eastern Nicaragua and eastern Honduras, to the north, in the coming days, the NHC said.

The NHC forecast between 38 and 51 centimeters (15 to 20 inches) of rain would fall in those areas.

"These rains could produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides," it added.

Ida's center was around 125 kilometers (75 miles) north of the city of Bluefields, and 105 kilometers (125 kilometers) south-southwest of the town of Puerto Cabezas, according to the latest NHC advisory.

The hurricane was moving to the northwest at around nine kilometers (six miles) per hour, it said.
