Climate Change And Atmospheric Circulation Will Make For Uneven Ozone Recovery Greenbelt MD (SPX) Apr 14, 2009
Earth's ozone layer should eventually recover from the unintended destruction brought on by the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and similar ozone-depleting chemicals in the 20th century. But new research by NASA scientists suggests the ozone layer of the future is unlikely to look much like the past because greenhouse gases are changing the dynamics of the atmosphere. Previous studies ha ... read moreConsequences Of A World Without Earth's Natural Sunscreen
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Mar 23, 2009The year is 2065. Nearly two-thirds of Earth's ozone is gone - not just over the poles, but everywhere. The infamous ozone hole over Antarctica, first discovered in the 1980s, is a year-round fixture, with a twin over the North Pole. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation falling on mid-latitude cities like Washington, D.C., is strong enough to cause sunburn in just five minutes. DNA-mutatin ... more

Sweden's ozone layer thickest in decades: institute
Stockholm (AFP) March 3, 2009The ozone layer over Sweden was thicker in February than it has been in decades, the Swedish meteorological institute SMHI said on Tuesday. Measurements taken at SMHI's station in Norrkoeping, just south of Stockholm, showed the ozone layer was at its thickest in February since recordings there began in 1988, with a measurement of 426 Dobson units (DU). At the Vindeln station in northern ... more 2008 Ozone Hole Maximum Announced
Washington DC (SPX) Nov 07, 2008The Antarctic ozone hole reached its annual maximum on Sept. 12, 2008, stretching over 27 million kilometers, or 10.5 square miles. The area of the ozone hole is calculated as an average of the daily areas for Sept. 21-30 from observations from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on NASA's Aura satellite. This is considered a "moderately large" ozone hole, according to NASA atmospheric ... more Wildfires Cause Ozone Pollution To Violate Health Standards
Boulder CO (SPX) Oct 14, 2008Wildfires can boost ozone pollution to levels that violate U.S. health standards, a new study concludes. The research, by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), focused on California wildfires in 2007, finding that they repeatedly caused ground-level ozone to spike to unhealthy levels across a broad area, including much of rural California as well as neighboring Nevad ... more Ozone hole larger in 2008 than previous year: WMO
Geneva (AFP) Sept 16, 2008The ozone hole is larger in 2008 than the previous year but is not expected to reach the size seen two years ago, the World Meteorological Organisation said Tuesday. "In 2008, the ozone hole appeared relatively late. However, during the last couple of weeks it has grown rapidly and has now passed the maximum size attained in 2007," the WMO said in a statement. The hole in the layer over ... more |

CFC smuggling key challenge in Asia, study says
Singapore (AFP) April 23, 2008Smuggling of ozone-depleting chemicals in the Asia-Pacific region is much worse than expected, a study released at a UN-backed environment conference said Wednesday. The study analysed the trade of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which are controlled under an international treaty, and discovered wide discrepancies in export and import figures between trading countries. "If you compare figure ... more Stratospheric Ozone Chemistry Plays An Important Role For Atmospheric Airflow Patterns
Bremerhaven, Germany (SPX) Mar 10, 2008Interactions between the stratospheric ozone chemistry and atmospheric air flow lead to significant changes of airflow patterns from the ground up to the stratosphere. This is the result of climate simulations, which have just been published in the journal "Geophysical Research Letters". Scientists at the Research Unit Potsdam of the Alfred Wegener Instite ... more |
