China's White Rabbit candy could go back on sale overseas by year-end

 The makers of White Rabbit candy said Wednesday China's most famous sweet could go back on sale on overseas markets by year-end after being recalled for containing contaminated milk.

New batches of the candies have passed government safety inspections and it will be relaunched Thursday in mainland China with new packaging, Weng Mao, chairman of Guan Sheng Yuan Group Co., said.

"We expect to relaunch the products on overseas markets either around the end of this year or the beginning of next year," Weng told a news conference.

Sales of White Rabbit's milk-flavoured sweets were halted on September 26 after they were found to contain melamine -- an industrial chemical that was added to Chinese milk to make its protein content seem higher.

Weng did not specify in which countries the company plans to resume sales, only saying the company has to first deal with demands for compensation.

Some analysts have said the scandal could be crippling for White Rabbit and that sales could struggle for up to a year.

The relaunch is a bid to mark a new chapter for the creamy candies, which were first produced in Shanghai in 1943 and are one of China's most recognisable brands.

China posts another record trade surplus despite global slowdown

 China said Monday its trade surplus hit a monthly all-time high of 29.3 billion dollars in September despite slowing global demand brought on by the financial crisis.
