Indonesia's tsunami-hit Aceh rattled by new quake
JAKARTA (AFP) Jan 29, 2005
A strong earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale rattled Indonesia's Aceh province Saturday -- the latest in a series of aftershocks to hit the region after the December 26 tsunami disaster.

A spokesman for the Meteorology and Geophysics agency said there were no reports of damage or casualties from the quake which struck at 9:55 am, 85 kilometres (52 miles) northwest of the main city of Banda Aceh.

He said the tremor was not strong enough to generate a tsunami.

"We predict in these coming weeks, that more of these will happen in Aceh, although we can't predict how big they will be," agency official Syahnan said.

Up to 280,000 people were killed around the Indian Ocean last month when a magnitude-9.0 earthquake sent enormous waves smashing into coastal communities.
