Russia To Commission Second Unit Of China Tianwan NPP In Sept

Russia's Federal Nuclear Power Agency (Rosatom) said in June that Russia and China were discussing potential projects to build fast neutron reactors, a uranium enrichment plant, and projects to introduce new technologies into the process of nuclear fuel management.

Russia's nuclear equipment export monopoly Atomstroyexport confirmed Tuesday it will commission the second unit of China's Tianwan nuclear power plant in September. The company is building the Tianwan NPP in eastern China's port city of Lianyungang under a 1992 agreement. The plant features improved VVER-1000 reactors and K-100-6/3000 turbo generators.

"Atomstroyexport will start commissioning the second unit following additional dynamic tests," the company said in a statement.

"We are expecting to commission the unit and start its commercial operation as early as September 2007," the statement said.

The second reactor, whose work was suspended July 16 for planned maintenance and additional testing at 100% capacity, has produced over 600,000 MW/h of electricity since early May.

The first reactor was completely commissioned in early June, and experts are preparing a feasibility study for the third and fourth units.

Key communist allies of India's coalition government rejected a civilian nuclear deal with the United States on Tuesday, warning Prime Minister Manmohan Singh against pushing ahead. A group of communist parties that support the Congress party-led coalition asked Singh not to go ahead with the complex deal known as the 123 agreement because it requires several steps in tandem by both nations before coming into force.
