Shanghai said Monday it will raise the minimum monthly wage by 13 percent, the latest pay hike in China as officials try to combat labour shortages and worker unrest, the official Xinhua agency said. As of April, Shanghai will increase the monthly minimum wage to 1,450 yuan ($230), Xinhua reported, quoting a statement from the city's human resources and social security bureau. In the southern economic hub of Shenzhen on the border with Hong Kong, the minimum wage was brought up 13.6 percent from February, while the capital Beijing announced an increase of almost 9 percent from January. In southwestern Sichuan province, where salaries are lower than in China's large coastal cities, the wages were also hiked by at least 23 percent, Xinhua said. The moves follow a series of strikes across China since November, as workers protest low salaries, wage cuts and poor conditions amid company cutbacks due to the global economic slowdown.
