The epicentre of the quake was put near the Huon Peninsula of the country, around 400 kilometres (300 miles) north of the capital Port Moresby, at latitude 6.46 degrees south and longitude 147.7 degrees east.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
On September 9, 2002, a 7.6-strong quake hit the country, killing six people and leaving 3,000 people homeless after causing a tidal wave to smash onto islands and coastal villages.
