Ebola epidemic kills 29 in Congo
BRAZZAVILLE (AFP) Dec 10, 2003
An outbreak of ebola fever in the Congo Republic has caused 29 deaths among the 42 cases registered, an official bulletin said Wednesday.

The director general of health, Damaze Bozongo, said the disease was stabilizing, with no deaths reported since December 2 in the villages of Mbomo and Banza, the two epicentres of the latest outbreak of the deadly feber in West Cuvette province.

The epidemic started in September. An epidemic in 2001 in the same region took more than 100 lives.

The source of the infection has not been identified, although the disease was first located in gorillas found dead in the forest.
