Bad snow storm hits New York days before start of spring
NEW YORK (AFP) Mar 16, 2004
Just five days before winter is due to end, New York was hit Tuesday by a snow storm that is expected to cover the ground to a depth of five centimeters (two inches).

Snow is set to fall throughout almost all the US northeast and mid-Atlantic states, weather forecasters said, and has already interrupted air traffic at New York's airports.

The low pressure system brought snow to the midwestern state of Ohio before daybreak, the National Weather Service reported.

The storm then moved east, blanketing parts of New York, Pennslyvania, southeastern New York and parts of Massachusetts and even Maryland with up to four inches of snow.

Flights into and out of John F. Kennedy airport were delayed in some cases up to three hours, the New York and New Jersey Port Authority said.

Bad weather forecasts also led to school closings across portions of Ohio and New York.

Forecasters say the snow could carry on falling at intervals until Friday.

Last year, snow fell in New York until midway through April.
