Strong earthquake registered off Chilean coast: US

A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale shook an area off the coast of central Chile, a US government service reported early Monday.

The US Geological Survey said in a preliminary report that the epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 0436 GMT, was located in the Pacific Ocean, about 90 kilometers (55 miles) south of the Chilean city of Concepcion.

There was no immediate words of casualties or damage.
