Snow in France causes power cuts, road closures
STRASBOURG (AFP) May 09, 2004
Unseasonably heavy snowfall on Sunday caught parts of northeast France off guard where thousands of homes faced power cuts and mountain roads were closed.

Some 5,000 households were without electricity, including two old age people's homes, in the Doubs and Jura regions overnight, police, firemen and the electricity company said.

For some the power shortage continued into the afternoon. Telephone lines were also cut in some regions.

Up to 30 centimetres of snow has fallen in some areas at above 900 metres (2,970 feet).
