Small earthquakes jolt Portuguese Azores islands
LISBON (AFP) Sep 07, 2004
The Portuguese mid-Atlantic Azores archipelago has been rocked by a string of low magnitude earthquakes in the past three days, seismic experts said on Tuesday.

Some 180 tiny jolts have been registered in the main island of Sao Miguel since Sunday, although the level of seismic activity diminished on Tuesday, Joao Luis Gaspar of the Sivisa institute told the Lusa news agency.

Nine islands make up the archipelago, of volcanic origin, which lies some 1,500 kilometres (900 miles) from the Portuguese coast.
