Moderate quake rocks southern Turkey
ANKARA (AFP) Sep 28, 2004
An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the open-ended Richter scale jolted the southern Turkish province of Mersin on Tuesday and officials reported no casualties or damage, the Anatolia news agency said.

The epicenter of the tremor, which hit at 11:02 a.m. (0802 GMT), was in the town of Erdemli, on the Mediterranean coast, the Istanbul-based Kandilli seismological institute said.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, where some 20,000 people were killed in two massive tremors in 1999.
