Debate-bound Bush surveys hurricane damage
MIAMI (AFP) Sep 30, 2004
Just hours before his first debate with Democratic White House hopeful John Kerry, US President George W. Bush on Thursday toured areas of Florida devastated by a spate of hurricanes in recent weeks.

The president visited a disaster relief center in Stuart, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) north of Miami, talking with rescue workers and victims of extensive flooding.

Bush praised his brother Jeb Bush, Florida's governor, saying he "has shown tremendous leadership and compassion during these trying days for this great state. I am really proud of him."

"I've asked Congress to provide 12.2 billion dollars in federal funds to respond to these storms. I urge the Congress to pass my supplemental request quickly, so the people of Florida can get the help they need," said the president.

Several hurricanes have ravaged Florida since mid-August, causing billion of dollars of damage and leaving about 100 people dead in their wake.

Bush was making his fifth visit the vote-rich state, which decided the disputed 2000 race and is a crucial battleground in the November 2 elections.

The president later travelled to Miami, where he was to take part in the first of three televised debates with Kerry.
