Female red panda Ying awaits Portuguese fiance in Latvian zoo
RIGA (AFP) Nov 04, 2004
Riga Zoo may soon get a fiance from Lisbon for its female red panda, Yang, a zoo spokesman said Thursday.

"The name of the male panda, born in Copenhagen in 2000, was not mentioned in the Lisbons zoo studybook," said Ingmars Lidaka, adding that the bear was due to arrive by the end of the year.

Another female panda, Ying, also born in 2000, is currently sharing life with Yang but is meant to have a new home in Norway after the fiance arrives, he said.

"Pandas feel good here, despite our long rainy seasons and rather hot summers. They have a nice house where Ying and Yang can get have a rest in shadowy corners," he explained.

Red pandas, which originally live in Asia -- Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal-- are an endangered species. They exist in the shadow of their black and white relatives, giant pandas.
