India to set up Indian Ocean tsunami watch
PORT BLAIR, India (AFP) Jan 17, 2005
India said Monday it was looking for partners in Southeast Asia to set up a tsunami warning system in the Indian Ocean.

"Each country in this region should contribute its might so that this plan materialises and all are benefited," Dhirendra Singh, a senior home ministry official, told reporters in the Andaman and Nicobar island capital.

"This is a serious issue and all regional partners should put their heads together to create this tsunami watch as soon as possible," he added.

The death toll in Andaman and Nicobar islands from the December 26 tsunami disaster stood at 1,894 on Monday with 5,583 people still missing.

Singh said the proposed tsunami warning system would be placed at many points in the India Ocean and would measure undersea seismic activities and behaviour of tides.

"These will be constantly monitored by satellites so that (an) alarm can be pressed at the right time," he said.

The official said India was also looking into setting up a "Natural Emergency Response Force" which would be carved out from existing paramilitary forces.
