Sri Lanka sets tsunami toll at 30,957 dead
COLOMBO (AFP) Jan 26, 2005
The Sri Lankan government confirmed Wednesday that 30,957 were killed and 5,637 are missing after last month's tsunamis, after one ministry retracted a higher figure it had issued earlier.

The Public Security Ministry, which is responsible for the police department, had earlier reported a death toll of 38,195.

Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar said the government would take the figure of 30,957 dead as issued by President Chandrika Kumaratunga's office, to ensure there was no discrepancy in the official toll.
