Two dead, one missing in Siberian flood
MOSCOW (AFP) Apr 29, 2005
Two people drowned and an elderly woman was missing after flash floods swept through a village in Siberia's Irkutsk region, forcing the evacuation of 222 people, the Russian federal emergency situations ministry said Friday.

The Biryuza river, blocked by massive ice and swollen after abundant rains, flooded the village's streets for hours, destroying 24 homes and damaging 93 more.

The floods, which are common in Siberia in the spring, have also threatened the city of Krasnoyarsk some 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) northwest of Irkutsk, where a state of emergency was declared after a dike burst in the city center.

The Kacha river flooded a neighborhood in Krasnoyarsk, forcing the evacuation of some 60 residents.
