Ten radioactive containers discovered in Siberia: report
MOSCOW (AFP) May 19, 2005
Ten containers emitting dangerous high-energy radiation have been discovered in northern Siberia, a local law enforcement official was quoted as saying Wednesday by the RIA Novosti news agency.

The containers were full of radium and cesium and were found in an industrial zone outside a vault specially equipped to receive such materials, said Andrei Dobrinin, an aide to the prosecutor in the Yamalo-Nenets autonomous region.

The containers were emitting ionizing radiation, which has high energy and can damage living tissue.

A criminal inquiry has been launched for illegal handling of nuclear or radioactive substance, Dobrinin said.
