Spanish forest fires under control
MADRID (AFP) Jul 23, 2005
Forest fires in drought-hit Spain's central-western Extremadura region near the border with Portugal that broke out two days ago have been brought under control, local officials said Saturday.

The fires which started blazing Thursday may be fully extinguished by Monday, a regional official told reporters. Some 7,500 hectares (18,500 acres) of woodland had gone up in smoke.

Meanwhile, seven small blazes in the Canary Islands were put out overnight but not before destroying 330 hectares.

Spain is experiencing its worst drought since 1945.

Eleven volunteer firefighters were killed last week in a massive blaze -- believed to have been sparked by a barbecue -- that ravaged a nature reserve in central Spain, the deadliest such fire in the country in more than a decade.
