It said the casualties had died of heart attacks while out in the street or in the fields doing farm work.

The emergency services have also been swamped with calls during the heatwave as dozens of people fainted in the streets.

Temperatures are expected to remain at 37 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) until Tuesday and the authorities have urged people to drink lots of water to help them cope with the heat.
