Man killed, thousands of villages lose power as storm hits Belarus
MINSK (AFP) Aug 10, 2005
One man was killed and nearly 3,000 villages suffered a power blackout as a storm whipped through northeast Belarus overnight, the country's interior ministry said Wednesday.

The man, a Russian citizen, was killed by a falling tree as winds of up to 100 kilometres an hour (63 miles an hour) pounded the northeast Vitebsk region, a spokesman for the ministry told AFP.

Thirteen hospitals and 52 schools were left without electricity. Electric trains in the area were also halted.

Some 10,000 emergency personnel were working to repair the damage, the spokesman said.
