One killed in Indonesian quake: ministry
JAKARTA, Nov 9 (AFP) Nov 09, 2009
One person was killed and more than 80 injured after a strong quake with a magnitude of 6.7 rocked the Indonesian island of Sumbawa on Monday, the health ministry said.

Health ministry crisis centre head Rustam Pakaya told AFP one person died after being rushed to hospital with head injuries.

"Eighty-eight people were injured, seven of them severely," Pakaya said.

The quake struck in the early hours with its epicentre about 16 kilometres (10 miles) from the town of Raba at a depth of 18 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

Pakaya said 282 homes had been damaged in the quake, which also caused damage to local health facilities.

State news agency Antara had earlier reported two people were killed when buildings collapsed on the island, which is to the east of Bali and Lombok.

There was no major tsunami threat from the quake, which occurred along the island's coast, said the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Indonesia sits on a Pacific "Ring of Fire," where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
