Emergency services battle German forest fires Berlin, July 3 (AFP) Jul 03, 2025 Emergency services in Germany were fighting two forest fires covering several hundred hectares in the east of the country on Thursday after a particularly hot and dry start to the year. The largest of the two, which began on Tuesday in the Gohrischheide nature reserve in the eastern region of Saxony, was impacting some 600 hectares (1,500 acres), local fire and rescue officials said. More than 500 firefighters had been mobilised to fight the blaze, two of whom were injured in the field on Wednesday. Residents from the surrounding area had been evacuated to safety following the eruption of the blaze. On Wednesday, around 270 people were moved out of the area, according to the local municipality. The second fire broke out Wednesday close to the town of Goesselsdorf in the region of Thuringia. Emergency teams were on Thursday still battling the blaze, which has spread over at least 250 hectares, the regional government said on its website. Germany experienced its hottest day of the year so far on Wednesday, with temperatures reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit). The unusually early spike in temperatures came at the end of an exceptionally dry first half of the year. From January to June, approximately 260 litres of rain per square metre fell across Germany -- just over two-thirds of the average in the reference period between 1961 and 1990, according to the German national weather service (DWD). In central and eastern parts of Germany, June had been "particularly dry", DWD said. |
