Third quake in three months rattles Turkey's Sindirgi Ankara, Nov 3 (AFP) Nov 03, 2025 A 4.9 magnitude earthquake rattled the western Turkish town of Sindirgi on Monday for the third time in less than three months, officials said. The quake occurred just after 3:30 pm (1230 GMT) at a depth of 11 kilometres (6.8 miles), Turkey's AFAD disaster agency management agency said on X. The Kandilli observatory and earthquake research institute said it had a slightly higher magnitude of 5.1. Sindirgi, nestled in the hills about 150 kilometres northeast of the resort city of Izmir, was shaken by a 6.1 magnitude quake on the evening of October 28 that was also felt in Izmir and Istanbul. Nobody was hurt. On August 10, a quake of the same magnitude killed one person and wounded dozens of others in Sindirgi. Turkey is crisscrossed by several geological fault lines that have previously caused catastrophes in the country. A quake in February 2023 in the southwest killed at least 53,000 people and devastated Antakya, site of the ancient city of Antioch. At the beginning of July, a 5.8-magnitude tremor in the same region resulted in one death and injured 69 people. |
