Dangerous livestock pest case confirmed in Texas
Washington, United States, June 4 (AFP) Jun 04, 2026
The United States said on Thursday that the New World screwworm fly, a dangerous livestock pest whose flesh-eating larvae can kill cattle, had been detected in a calf in south Texas.

"We have a confirmed positive detection of New World screw worm in a three-week-old calf," said Brooke Rollins, the US agriculture secretary, in a briefing in which she said "immediate action" to contain and eradicate the parasite was underway.

Last summer the United States banned livestock trade with Mexico over reports that cattle there tested positive for the pest. It was eradicated in the United States in 1966 until an outbreak in southern Florida in 2016, according to the US Department of Agriculture website.
