Guinea strongman Mamady Doumbouya's party won a landslide in parliamentary and local elections boycotted by the main opposition, the electoral body said Friday. The elections last Sunday were a step towards a return to democratic rule after a 2021 coup that has been followed by severe restrictions on civil liberties in the west African country.
Doumbouya's Generation for Modernity and Development movement won a majority of the 147 seats in the National Assembly as well as in municipal councils, according to provisional results announced by the General Directorate of Elections.
In March, the government dissolved the main opposition parties who called for a boycott of an "electoral farce".
Observers from the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding NGO noted "operational failures" in the organisation of the vote as well as cases of corruption, pressure and administrative interference.
The supreme court is to announce the final results in around two weeks.
Doumbouya, who seized power in September 2021, was elected president for a seven-year term in December having faced no serious opponent.
He had initially promised to hand power back to civilians at the end of a transition period.
His government has suspended many political parties, banned protests and arrested opposition and civil society leaders.
