China's special envoy to Darfur arrived in Sudan on Friday for a five-day visit for talks with officials on the situation in the volatile western region, an AFP correspondent said.

Liu Guijin flew in from the Qatari capital Doha, where he met this week with Darfur envoys from the four other permanent members of the UN Security Council -- Britain, France, Russia and the United States -- and the European Union.

The Chinese diplomat will hold talks in Khartoum on "current efforts to find a peaceful solution" to Darfur, Sudanese foreign ministry spokesman Ali Sadiq said.

China is seen as a key to ending the six-year war between the Khartoum government and rebels in the western Darfur region because it is an ally of the Khartoum regime, a weapons supplier and importer of Sudanese oil.

The United Nations says up to 300,000 people have died in Darfur from the combined effects of war, famine and disease and about 2.7 million fled their homes. Sudan puts the death toll at 10,000.

Darfur's most active rebel group, the Justice and Equality Movement, agreed earlier this month to resume talks with the Khartoum government in an effort to achieve lasting peace in the troubled region.
