The Indian Express newspaper said Tuesday that India would begin discussions with Japan to end nuclear proliferation during Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso's visit which begins Tuesday.

"Both sides will be looking to realize the understanding reached during Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumu's visit in April last year, under which both countries agreed to work together as partners against proliferation," said an Indian foreign ministry spokesman.

Aso's visit comes at a crucial time for India as New Delhi has been working hard to implement its July 18 civilian nuclear energy deal with the United States.

Analysts said Japan, a key member of the elite Nuclear Suppliers Group, may help India in its bid to remove restrictions that currently prevent Indian access to nuclear technology.

India has held talks with Japan on this issue in the past. Tokyo has opposed New Delhi's nuclear program at various forums including NSG.

"In this context, Koizumi's visit had provided a window of opportunity as the two prime ministers agreed to promote commonalities and identify areas of convergence for constructive cooperation," said another report.

An Indian official said New Delhi would attempt to present a clearer prospective of its nuclear program, adding that it would clarify specific questions Tokyo has about New Delhi's nuclear intentions.
