Greek capital sizzles in heatwave

The Greek capital is sizzling in the hottest weather for 106 years, according to records by the Athens Observatory reported on Tuesday.

The average maximum temperature in June was 33.9 Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit).

The temperature has remained four degrees above the seasonal average for the past two months. The average daily minumum temperature in June, 23.5 degrees, was 3.4 degrees higher than the average recorded in previous years.

Similar above-average temperatures have been recorded in other parts of Greece, with the highest increase -- 4.6 degrees above the seasonal norm -- measured on the island of Corfu.
