OFFENBACH, Germany (AFP) Jul 21, 2003
Germany sweated through its hottest day of the year Sunday with the mercury rising to 37.9 degrees Celciusdegrees Fahrenheit) in the southwest city of Karlsruhe, weather officials said.

Temperatures in Mannheim, farther to the north, also hit 37.7 degrees.

Storms overnight brought down trees and traffic signs, and a farmer was badly injured in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate trying to get his tractor out of a barn that had been set on fire by lightning, police said Monday.
