100 hectares of forest destroyed in western Greece
ATHENS (AFP) Jul 22, 2003
A fire destroyed about 100 hectares (250 acres) of young trees in replanted forest in western Greece overnight, the Greek fire brigade said in a press release Tuesday.

More than 200 firemen fought to bring the fire under control using 10 aircraft, three helicopters and 40 vehicles.

The fire brigade said around 10 more minor fires broke out across the country on Monday.

No casualties or major damage to property were reported.

The combination of high temperatures and strong winds created conditions conducive to fires, fire brigade officers said.

However, they did not exclude arson as the possible cause for some of the blazes.
