Torrential downpour claims at least 18 in Mongolia
BEIJING (AFP) Jul 24, 2003
Torrential rains and hailstorms in northern Mongolia have killed at least 18 people, Chinese state media reported Thursday.

Ten people in the capital Ulan Bator were killed and more than 100 homes were destroyed, the Xinhua news agency cited Gurragchaa, the director of the state emergencies committee, as saying.

Seven other people drowned and one was struck by lightning in various incidents in the northern part of the country.

Government officials said the storms, the worst experienced by the country since the 1982 floods that killed more than 100 people, also damaged roads and bridges in the remote north of Mongolia, a country more prone to drought than floods.
