Twenty dead, three missing after typhoon rages across south China
BEIJING (AFP) Jul 26, 2003
Chinese officials Saturday raised the confirmed death toll from Typhoon Imbudo to 20, with three still missing, state media said.

At least 12 people were killed in southern Guangxi region, adding to a previously announced death toll of eight in neighboring Guangdong province, the Xinhua news agency reported.

Preliminary damage assessments after the typhoon showed that 3.95 million people living in 352 villages had been affected in Guangxi alone, the agency reported.

Nearly 5,000 rooms had been damaged in Guizhou, according to Xinhua, which adopts the Chinese practice of calculating typhoon damage in terms of rooms rather than buildings.

Off the south coast of China, three fishermen were still missing as of Friday, the China Daily said.

Imbudo had weakened and moved into southwestern provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou Saturday morning, producing only scattered showers, officials told AFP.
