Twenty-nine people were killed and 31 were reported missing after massive landslides triggered by incessant rains engulfed homes in several areas of Nepal, state-run radio said Thursday.

A total of 22 people were killed in Manakamana village in the Gorkha district, 85 kilometres (53 miles) west of Kathmandu, when seven houses were buried in a landslide Wednesday night, it said.

"Seven people were killed in landslides in several areas in Hetaunda (south of here) on Wednesday," it added.

Twenty-two others, including five from one family, were reported missing in several villages in the southern Chitwan district Wednesday night when nine houses were buried, the radio said.

Nine others were reported missing in several areas in Nawalparasi district, west of Kathmandu on Wednesday night.

"Royal Nepal Army and police teams despatched from Kathmandu are already carrying on relief operations in the landslide-affected areas," it said.

Some roads were closed by the landslides, which are common in Nepal's summer, as snow melts in the Himalayas and lowland areas are hit by monsoon rains.
