A hot night for the Germans, who say it's great
BERLIN (AFP) Aug 08, 2003
Germany sweated through its warmest night on record overnight and the thermometer is not expected to cool until the middle of next week, metereologists said Friday.

The overnight temperature in Weinbiet bei Neustadt in western Germany was 26.7 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit), the weather service said.

That is the highest night temperature -- recordings are taken between 7:30 pm and 7:30 am -- since records began.

Daytime temperatures have been reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile a poll showed 42 percent of Germans think the current heatwave, which is gripping much of western Europe with temperatures reaching above 40 degrees, is "great."

However, 35 percent thought it too hot, including 22 percent who said they were suffering under the heat.

The elderly complained the most, and women more than men, the poll of just over 1,000 people for the Bildwoche weekly magazine showed.
