Pope John Paul II led prayers Sunday calling for rain to bring relief to a parched Europe, caught in an oppressive heat wave with temperatures reaching record highs.

"I urge you to fervently pray to the Lord to give the parched earth a bit of cool rain," the pontiff said in prayers at his summer residence in Castelgandolfo, southeast of the Vatican.

"I invite you to join my prayer for the victims of this calamity," he added, with the heat wave already claiming the lives of dozens across the continent.
