French Veolia wins Chinese water, waste treatment contracts
PARIS (AFP) Sep 10, 2003
The French utility group Veolia Environnement has signed two contracts for water and waste treatment in Beijing and Shanghai, the company said Wednesday.

The group's Veolia Water unit won a 20-year concession worth 50 million euros (56 million dollars) to run a water sanitation plant being built in the west Beijing district of Luguqiao, its first deal in the Chinese capital, the company said in a statement.

The plant is one of six being built ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games with a loan from the World Bank.

Veolia's other Chinese contract was signed between its Onyx waste disposal subsidiary and Shanghai Huansheng Waste-To-Energy, the Chinese city's waste disposal service.

Under the 20-year concession, Onyx is to manage China's largest waste-to-energy facility, which can treat up to 1,000 tons of domestic waste per day, the company statement said.

Financial details on the second accord were not disclosed.
