World Parks Congress closes
DURBAN, South Africa (AFP) Sep 17, 2003
The fifth World Parks Congress closed in South Africa's eastern port city of Durban on Wednesday with the adoption of an accord mapping out targets for the next 10 years.

Some 2,500 delegates from across the world attended the once-a-decade conference over 10 days, discussing how to manage and safeguard the Earth's 100,000 protected areas.

"The Durban Accord sets a new vision -- one that is clear, and one that is feasible for the world to implement. But more than that, it has created the energy and will to take this agenda for the next decade and put it to work," said congress secretary general David Sheppard.
